The old rockin' chair

Published about 1 month ago • 2 min read

Hi Reader,

The rockin' chair

Sitting in its massive cradle of arms, back, and seat, I wondered out loud, “Why does it keep rocking? “
“Because you’re little.” Like that was an answer.
I could curl up in the seat of my grandmother’s rocker and once I got it moving it would keep it up for a surprisingly long time… long time in kid-time.
Only a grown-up could move this massive wooden piece of furniture to wherever it was needed. There it seemed to just wait quietly and patiently. And, like a gnarly old tree waiting to be climbed, it would gently wake up when you climbed aboard.
I don’t know what happened to it. In later years when the old folks moved to a new house, there was another big wooden rocking chair, but lacking the weight and balance, it didn’t get my attention.
“Why didn’t it rock like it should?” I wondered aloud.
I didn’t get an answer to that question, either.

Finding our own rhythms

The 24-hour clock favors certain organic energetic expressions, according to ancient traditional medicine. This is one of the ways an acupuncturist interprets the picture of your symptoms. For example, the time for the liver is 1:00 to 3:00 AM. Normally the liver is working automatically in the background while we are asleep. But if you find this is a time when you wake, you will probably also notice you are planning something. Emotionally, it can be a time of agitation if you can’t see a clear path to your intended plan. This is because both vision and planning are talents attributed to the energy of the liver.

You can use the 24-hour clock to simply map your patterns in a personal energetic clock. Take a page in your journal and mark times in the day and night when you are pleased or uplifted. Notice frequently recurring moods and activities, such as:

  • What time of the day do you find you smile easier?
  • When do you find old acquaintances pop up in your memory?
  • When do you feel surges of energy?
  • When do you need a nap?
  • What is going on in the two hours before you feel troubled?
  • When does your body temperature fluctuate – becoming cooler or warmer?
  • When do you daydream?
  • When do you find you are able to connect old memories with current events. This will build a library of relevant memory vignettes.

Feeling good, understanding your ebbs and flows, your acts of healthy eating, and moving with joy are pieces of your basic energetic codes. You can use this information to improve self-care skills.

I encourage you to seek out the activities and efforts that support your precious essential nature. Fully enjoy physical expressions like dance, athletic competition, or simple fitness workouts. Find the diet that supports your body and comforts you. Hold fast companionship that enriches your life.

Reclaiming our nature does more than prevent escalating problems. It also reverses many unwanted errors.

Some call it pre-habilitation. I call it "enjoying the ride".

Food Rituals We enjoy the ritual of eating with friends and family. And when we eat alone, we can be awash in memories complete with replays of bits of old conversations. Jewish tradition considers a meal as any repast in which bread is consumed, so they begin a meal with the blessing over bread and then the sharing of bread together. The blessing below is widely known to most Jews, "who have heard it since childhood and who may even have memorized it just by having said it so often". A...

Let's breathe deeply - reset stress

Shallow breathing is good if you are stalking an animal to bring home for dinner or if you need to give a quick explanation when a boss asks you about a project. But if practiced habitually, small and restricted chest movements can cause many unwanted results and symptoms in your body, such as awkward posture, painful structures, and poorly functioning organs. Although subtle, the relentless clenching of being ready for something requires the sympathetic nervous system to be “on” and results...

Have you ever wondered why you can’t accomplish a specific task, or why you are not where you want to be in life? Ideally, consciousness and unconsciousness work to complement each other, but when these processes are battling at cross-purposes, indecision or poor decisions rob you of your energy and undermine your goals. Writing regularly in a journal may be the sauce that holds them together. Writing honest reflections is a good way to bring these aspects into full view. You can start now...
